Two Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jugs, WV and Western PA origin, fourth quarter 19th century, a small-sized jug with brushed floral and foliate motifs, stenciled "RICE & BROYLES," paired with a semi-ovoid jug, stenciled "A.M. CARSON & CO. / DEALERS IN GEN. / MERCHAN' / BUTTER, EGGS & POULTRY. / SPECIALTIES. / JACKSON COURTHOUSE / W. VA." Shorter with restored handle and some spout wear, a 1 1/4" flake to underside, and areas of varnish to surface. Taller with a restored handle, some restoration to body (not affecting cobalt), an in-the-firing contact mark to proper left side of jug, and minor spout wear. H (of shorter) 8 1/2".
