Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Stripe Decoration, Stenciled "Knox, Haught & Co. / Shinnston . W. Va.," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring four freehand stripes above Knox, Haught & Company maker's stenciling, incorporating stylized stenciled flourishes. Further decorated below with a cobalt-script "2" flanked by heavy dashes on each side and underscored by a dash. Bottom edge of jar with a 1 3/4" in-the-firing flake and minor in-the-firing chipping. A few small, shallow chips to bottom edge of jar's rim, probably in the firing. A small piece of adhered clay below rim. A 1" in-the-firing contact mark to proper left side. Some staining, light wear, and minor residue to surface. H 12".
