Rare Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock with Cottageville, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled advertising, "D. W. SAYRE. / DEALER IN / DRY GOODS, / GROCERIES, NOTIONS, CLOTHING & C. / COTTAGEVILLE, W.VA." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Base with freehand "5" flanked by flourishes. A 2 1/8" x 7/8" rim chip on proper left side of crock. Some staining to reverse and minor staining elsewhere. H 13 3/4".
