Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Wick, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1885, tapered jar with semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "W.M. STEALEY & CO. / DEALERS / IN / GENERAL MERCHANDISE / WICK. W. VA." Freehand stripe decoration above and below. The only piece featuring advertising for this town that we have offered. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., Fall 2021 Auction, lot 136. A shallow 3/4" chip to interior of rim and minor chip to interior of rim. Traces of old paint to interior of rim. A few minor chips to inner wax sealer rim. The name "Jeanne" written in much later ink on underside. H 10".
