Very Rare Cobalt-Stenciled Stoneware Canning Jar with St. Marys, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, tapering jar with flared "wax sealer" rim, featuring the stenciled advertising "JOS STRICKLING & / SONS / GEN'L / MERCHANDISE / ST. MARYS, W. VA." The first piece featuring advertising for this town that we have offered. A child's hand print is visible in the clay on the vessel's side/reverse. Very nice condition. Some in-the-making smudges to cobalt. A miniscule nick to exterior of rim. Inner wax sealer rim with a small chip and two minor nicks. Minor wear to cobalt. A minor in-the-firing surface fissure to underside, not visible on interior. H 8 1/2".
