Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Elizabeth, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, tapering jar with rounded "wax sealer" rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "DAVID BURNS & / CO. / DEALERS IN / STAPLE AND FANCY / GROCERIES. / ELIZABETH. W. VA." Freehand stripe decoration above and below. Only the second example featuring advertising for this town that we have offered. Very nice condition. Two small, shallow chips to interior of rim. A small, shallow chip to inner wax sealer rim. Marker notation on underside, reading "2013 / $2200." Some light surface wear and minor staining. H 9 7/8".
