Exceptional Cobalt-Stenciled Stoneware Jar with Rivesville, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "S. H. AMOS. / WARES & PROVISIONS. / RIEVSVILLE,(sic) / W. VA." One of only three pieces with Rivesville stenciling that we have ever offered, this jar is also the first bearing this specific advertising, which includes a misspelling of Rivesville. Interior of rim with a small chip and small in-the-firing flake. A minor base chip. A few tiny to small in-the-firing pings to surface. Some staining. An in-the-firing contact mark at base including a small piece of adhered clay. A 1/2" in-the-making base chip. A few minor in-the-firing pings to surface. Two salt drips to underside. H 8".
