Outstanding Two-Gallon Stoneware Syrup Jug with Cobalt Eagle and Banner Motif and Mechanicville, NY Advertising, third quarter 19th century, cylindrical jug with rounded shoulder and flaring, pinched spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flying eagle with spotted banner in its beak. Impressed above with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "ET FORD & CO / MECHANICVILL / NY." Desirable form, rare merchant mark, and excellent decoration featuring crisp, enamel-like slip-trailing. An approximately 4 3/4" fork-shaped surface line descending from spout on proper left side of jug, not visible on interior. Some light staining to reverse. A small in-the-firing ping at base on front. Three small base chips and a 7/8" in-the-firing chip to bottom edge. H 13 5/8".
