Exceptional Five-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Turkey Decoration, Stamped "W-A-LEWIS / GALESVILLE - N-Y," circa 1857-1860, cylindrical jug with rounded spout and two applied vertical handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a strutting turkey with spotted details to the body. Elaborate wave-like ground below accents with a shrub and large bush. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The best example of Lewis's desirable turkey motif that we have offered. Excellent condition with some light surface wear and a shallow in-the-firing chip to spout. H 18 1/4".
