Rare and Fine Slip-Decorated Sewer Tile Man's Bust, OH origin, fourth quarter 19th century, hand-modeled sculpture of a mustached man's bust with parted and upswept hair atop a circular base, the head and neck coated in whitish slip, the entire surface coated in a clear salt glaze. Heavily-incised details to hair, eyebrows, mustache, and eyes. Among the finer and earlier examples of sewer tile that we have offered, featuring refined modeling and unusual slip treatment to the surface. Provenance: George H. Meyer Collection; acquired from David Good. A 2 1/4" x 1 1/4" loss to base on reverse, including a 1 1/4" line ascending from it. A few other small base chips. Restoration to proper left ear, including part of sideburn. H 7 1/2" ; L 5 1/4" ; W 5 1/4".
