Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1865, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with heavily-spotted body, fan-shaped tail, and turned head, perched on a vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Areas of restoration to rim. Unrestored chips to inner rim for lid. Areas of restoration to surface, primarily to base area on front. A very long, partially-painted X-shaped hairline to proper right side of churn, extending onto reverse and front. Exfoliation to underside. H 18 1/2".
