Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "S D. KELLOGG. / WHATELY," MA origin, circa 1851-1853, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a bird with spotted body, perched on a scrolled vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A significant spider crack on reverse adjoining a significant spider crack on underside. A 4" hairline from rim on reverse. A large Y-shaped line to front and small Y-shaped surface line to front. A small in-the-firing iron ping near base on front. Staining to surface and in-the-firing burns to reverse. Jar is somewhat out-of-round. H 10 3/8".
