Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Churn, attributed to Stephen B. Sweeney, Henrico County, VA, circa 1838-1863, ovoid churn with flared collar and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with diagonal swags at the shoulder on the front and reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes associated salt-glazed lid and wooden dasher. Churn in excellent, essentially as-made condition. Rim slightly misshapen. Collar with an in-the-firing, glazed-over chip and stone ping. Two small chips to inner rim for lid. Some minor, in-the-making wear to inner rim for lid. Lid with small edge chips. H 17 1/2".
