Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Central PA origin, circa 1865-1875, ovoid bowl with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with a cobalt-slip design of a bird with solid wing, seated on a well-executed stump with sawed branch and shaded edge. Excellent size, form, and decoration. Few bowl forms with figural decoration are known in American stoneware production. A shallow rim chip on reverse, two other minor rim chips, and some typical light wear to interior of rim. H 6" ; Diameter 8 5/8".
