Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, attributed to James Egbert and Durrell Williams, Poughkeepsie, NY, late 18th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and arching tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two different incised and cobalt-highlighted flower blossoms. Additional brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The distinctive form of this example matches an iconic jar with incised bird decoration, bearing the inscription, "October 6, 1798 / Poughkeepsie". Relatively few incised examples of Poughkeepsie stoneware from this, or any, period are known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 1 1/2" restored handle chip. Two restored rim chips, measuring 1 3/4" and 1 1/4". A 1 1/2" in-the-firing contact mark / chip to one side. Heavy chipping to base. One handle with a shallow 1 1/4" chip and thin cracks. A few small chips to top of rim. Some fairly innocuous surface lines to rim and shoulder area. H 13".
