Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug-Form Cooler with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK /ATHENS," New York State origin, circa 1820, ovoid jug with tooled spout, ribbed handle, and circular bung hole at base, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird perched on a cluster of leaves, holding a sprig in its beak. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and at lower handle terminal. Exceptional form for this maker, featuring a striking figural design. Includes wooden stopper. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 15 1/2".
