Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Triple Fruit Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and thick spout, decorated with an extremely rare cobalt design of a pomegranate, pear, and cluster of grapes extending from connected stems with leaves. The stems and corkscrewing vines within the decoration are applied by slip cup. The color of the cobalt and contrast with the surrounding fired clay is exceptional. One of the finest examples of Cowden & Wilcox stoneware to be sold at auction within the past several years. Remarkable, as-made condition with a small stone ping on the reverse and a small in-the-making chip to spout. H 16 1/2"
