Extremely Rare Glazed Stoneware Face Harvest Jug, Alabama origin, fourth quarter 19th century, ovoid form with tooled shoulder and applied tubular spout in rear, the front featuring a hand-modeled and applied face with raised forehead, large ears, open mouth, nose with carved nostrils, and bulging eyes set into recessed sockets. Surface covered in a reddish-brown slip glaze with appealing speckles throughout. The slip was carved away on the eyes prior to firing to create stylized pupils. Outstanding folk art form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found by the consignor in Virginia. Chip to nose. One chip to ear. A few chips to opposite ear. A chip and minor wear to mouth. Spout with some glaze wear and a minor chip. A shallow base flake and two minor base chips. H 10".
