Exceptional Four-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1790-1800, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with flared collar and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised design of an undulating vine bearing three flower blossoms highlighted in heavy brushed cobalt. This decoration is executed with an artistic flair, and includes a central stem formed from a three-pronged stylus and heavy combed embellishments to the interior of the leaves and flowers. Both of these treatments can be observed on a body of finely-incised pieces originating from Manhattan during the 1790-1800 time period. While the maker of this jar is currently unknown, its fan-shaped floral motifs can be linked to the work of Thomas Commeraw, David Morgan, and John Remmey III, all of whom employed similar decorations. Its outstanding decoration is met with brilliant color and an appealing jar form, shorter and wider than most from the time period. Rim chips. One handle with a hairline and small piece of adhered clay. Heavy chipping to base, primarily on one side. A 6 1/4" cross-shaped hairline to body. Several vertical hairlines to base area, including one which extends 6" up one side of jar. H 13".
