Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a rooster standing atop a shrubbed ground with pine tree to the right. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Three Y-shaped surface lines on reverse and side/right edge of front of crock, measuring 4 1/4", 4", and 3". All of these are not visible on interior, remaining in the exterior surface only. A 2 1/4" salt drip to reverse. A 5/8" in-the-firing ping to left side of crock.
