New World Auction Record for Alexandria, Virginia Stoneware

HUGH SMITH & CO. Stoneware Jar attributed to Enslaved Potter, Thomas Valentine
Lot 129 (the “Hugh Smith & Co.” jar attributed to enslaved potter Thomas Valentine) in our July 20th auction realized a new World Auction Record for Alexandria stoneware at $17,700 (including 18% buyer’s premium)! This eclipses the previous record, held by a B.C. Milburn water cooler that sold for $15,525 in our March 2008 auction.
