HOW TO BID

PHONE BIDDING

You can bid live on the telephone as the auction is happening.

How to Bid

We are more than happy to call you during the auction and bid with you live as your lot is selling. Keep in mind that by signing up for phone bidding, you agree to bid either (a) half of the lot's low estimate or (b) $200, whichever is greater. For items in lower price ranges, please consider one of our other remote bidding methods (internet absentee bidding, live internet bidding, or traditional absentee bidding).

If you already know how phone bidding works and you just want to get started, there are a few ways to do so:

1. Download our easy-to-use phone bid form (CLICK HERE TO DO SO), fill it out, and fax it to us. (Fax Number: 877-815-6954.)

2. Give us a call at (410) 472-2016 or email us. If you call us, we'll ask for the lot numbers you'd like to bid on. If you send us an e-mail, make sure to include the lot numbers along with your name, address, and telephone number. If you've never dealt with us before, we may ask for a credit card number (that will not be charged unless at your specific direction) to secure your bids.

A Few Notes about Phone Bidding

Crocker Farm is a real, live, traditional auction, not an eBay-style or "absentee" auction. The action for each lot happens in real time, usually within a minute or two, at our auction gallery in Sparks, MD. When you phone bid with us, it is as if you are physically present in the auction room, bidding right along with everyone else. You will hear the auction happening in the background and can react as if you were there.

Since phone bidding is very similar to live, in-person bidding, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with how our live auction works if you want to participate via telephone.

Order of Sale

Everything is sold according to lot number; so lot 1 is sold at about 10 am, lot 2 is sold after that, and so on. We generally average about 80 lots an hour, with the auction running slower at the beginning and picking up speed as we go along.

When Your Lots Are Sold

Let's say you want to phone bid on lot 100. Sometime around 11:30 am or so on the morning of the auction, a couple of lots before lot 100 gets put up for sale, we will call you. After you answer, we will usually put the phone down and let you listen to the sale while we wait for your lot to come up. When lot 100 comes up, we will pick up the phone and bid with you. The action happens pretty quickly, and usually starts with the auction floor. As the bids progress, we will update you on the status of the bids and ask if you want to bid. As soon as there is a lull that would allow us to jump in, we will do so. Once you are in, we will continue to bid for you until you win or you no longer want to bid.

Please act quickly as we phone bid. The action happens very quickly and the auctioneer will hammer a lot down at his discretion. If we are bidding at a certain pace, someone else bids, and then the auctioneer asks for a bid from your phone, please be decisive. If you hesitate long enough, he will assume you don't want to bid anymore and give the lot to the opposing bidder.

Be Ready to Bid

Please make sure you are available at the phone number you provided us with. Except for the very first lots in the auction, we are unable to give you an exact time that a particular piece will sell. Feel free to ask for a ballpark time; in general, about 60-80 lots an hour is a good rule of thumb.

When your lot is put up for sale, we will do everything in our power to call you and bid with you, and are very serious about getting in touch with you. If you don't pick up, we will try again. If you still don't pick up, if there is still time, we will try again. It is very important to us that you get to bid on whatever lot you are planning on bidding on, so please make sure you are standing by to bid when we call you.

After the Auction

If you are a successful absentee or phone bidder, you should receive an invoice from us the week after the auction; we generally send invoices on the Monday after each sale.

We offer full-service packing and shipping to deliver your items to you.
