Extremely Rare Miniature Stoneware Gemel with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, probably New-Haven, Connecticut, circa 1830, pair of conjoined ovoid jugs rounded spouts, each with a delicate applied handle and foliate decorations on each side. Heavy cobalt highlights to spouts, handles, and juncture between jugs. A scarce form even in a standard size, the gemel is considered extraordinary as a miniature. This example is one of only a small number of miniature gemels known, and is believed to be the first to come to auction in many years. An interesting aspect of this particular object is the application of a handle to each jug, as the majority of known gemels feature a single handle between both jugs. Aspects of the color and form indicate this piece was probably made in New Haven, CT, possibly at the firm of Stedman and Seymour. An remarkable aspect of this example is the fact that, despite its fragility, it has survived in original condition with both handles intact. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately twenty years ago. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 3 1/8".
