WORLD AUCTION RECORD: MASSACHUSETTS STONEWARE

04-09-2021

The story of Massachusetts stoneware is very similar to, say, New York, where very early attempts to produce stoneware in the 18th century eventually led to a thriving craft in the 1790's around the port city of Boston, before eventually spreading to many other locales throughout the state. Here you will typically find Charlestown / Boston stoneware made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, along with northeastern style stoneware from later in the 19th century, adorned with beautiful cobalt blue decorations. These latter pieces originated in towns like Worcester, Whately, Taunton and Somerset.
