Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Cornucopia Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA", circa 1865, large-sized, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a stylized cornucopia brimming with leaves, fruit, and a central daisy blossom. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Exceptional size, brilliant color, and striking decoration. Few Harrisburg cornucopia-decorated pieces are known. An approximately 8 1/2" restored crack from rim on reverse. An approximately 6 1/2" restored crack from rim on side of jar, including some touch-up to cobalt at one handle terminal. A tightly-sealed, approximately 6 1/2" crack from rim on front, with touch-up to area above decoration only. Decoration remains untouched. Restoration to areas of rim and base. A 5 1/2" hairline on underside, continuing onto base, where it forms a thin L-shaped crack extending a few inches from bottom edge. A 1" glazed-over base chip on reverse. A minor rim chip on reverse. A faint X-shaped surface line to base of decoration, not visible on interior. A small Y-shaped surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. Staining to surface. H 14 3/8".
