Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Reclining Dog with Birds Scene, Stamped "WEST TROY / N.Y. / POTTERY," circa 1875, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed and slip-trailed design of a dog with turned head and curled tail, reclining atop a heavily-detailed ground with a tree and two flying birds to the right. Excellent, folky presence about the dog with highly-stylized head and large eye. The addition of the tree with birds is quite unusual. Literature: Pictured on the cover of the 1985 stoneware catalog from 3 Behrs, Carmel NY. Significant restoration to exfoliation to surface, primarily on reverse and sides. Additional filled and colored flakes to front, not affecting decoration. Some restoration and a short line in one handle. Opposite handle is possibly a complete restoration. Some restoration to rim.
