Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Recumbent Deer Scene, Stamped "EDMANDS & CO.", Charlestown, MA origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head, reclining on a stylized ground between two trees and a split-rail fence. Appealing spotted and striped detail to deer's body. Excellent form. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with mottling to surface, an in-the-firing lime ping at base on reverse and an in-the-firing iron ping to interior base.
