Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD. / BURLINGTON, VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with an abstract slip-trailed flower design featuring two spiraling blossoms, accented throughout with spots. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes possibly original salt-glazed stoneware lid. One handle with a 1 1/2" hairline and a shallow 1 1/8" chip. Other handle with two shallow chips and a minor nick. Chipping to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. Water glass staining to surface. A 7/8" flake to underside. Lid in excellent condition with minor water glass residue. H (excluding lid) 11".
