Scarce Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE / HAVANA, N.Y.," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head, long tail, and striped body, perched on a leafy stem. Slip-trailed "6" to right of decoration. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Fry to cobalt. One handle reglued. 1 1/2" crack above one handle. Glazed-over line in terminal of opposite handle. Chip to interior of rim.
