Extremely Rare Stoneware Civil War Jug with Cobalt Shield Decoration, Stamped "SATTERLLE & MORY / FORT EDWARD, NY," circa 1861-1865, cylindrical jug with sloped shoulder and squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed Federal shield featuring stars and stripes, accented above by an arching bands of additional stars. Inscribed within a rectangular border at base "union.". This jug was made by the potting firm of Satterlee & Mory to support the Union during the Civil War, or, perhaps, to commemorate the end of the Civil War. Excellent color and highly unusual design. American stoneware pieces with significance to the Civil War are highly unusual. Excellent condition. Two chips on exterior of rim. Two small chips on interior of rim, possibly in-the-firing. H 15 1/2".
