Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Motif, Stamped "EVAN R. JONES / PITTSTON, PA.," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with the profile of a man's face with a long, crescent-shaped bough of leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A superb example of a classic Cowden-inspired design, featuring excellent color, an unusually long rendering of the bough, and a desirable small size to the vessel. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor in April, 1988 from Ernie Graf, Grandville, Michigan. A thin 2 1/2" crack from rim on front, including some restoration on the interior to area that corresponds to the crack as well as a small amount of fill along this crack at the rim. Some light bubbling to cobalt. H 7 3/4".
