Glazed Redware Lidded Ale Mug, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA origin, circa 1840, stylishly-potted mug with coved and footed base, ovoid body, cylindrical collar, and spurred handle, decorated throughout with sponged manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Includes original domed lid with matching glaze scheme. Impressed on underside of mug with John Bell maker's mark. Literature: Illustrated in Comstock's The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region. Provenance: From a forty year private collection. Mug in excellent condition with some minor wear to midsection. Some professional restoration to edge of lid. H (including lid) 7 1/4".
