Unusual Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "P. HERRMANN.," Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a swag-and-hanging-flower motif on the front and reverse. Collar decorated with foliate designs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Among the finest and earliest Peter Herrmann jars that we have offered, featuring an unusual decorated flaring collar related to Baltimore pieces produced decades prior. A large in-the-firing surface chip to one side, beside a small adhered piece of clay. Reverse with a section of adhered clay and small recessed area. Small chips to interior of rim. Hairlines across underside and a few short vertical lines to base. Minor chipping to base. One handle with traces of white paint and a minor chip. Chipping to opposite handle. H 13 3/4".
