Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Grapes Motif, Stenciled "J.M. HARDEN / Palatine. WVa.," circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooling to shoulder and spout, featuring a stenciled grape vine design above intricate J.M. Harden maker's stenciling. Stenciled "3" underscored by a freehand stripe at base. Rare freehand dash and stripe decoration to spout and handle. Cobalt highlight to lower handle terminal. Spout chips. A minor in-the-firing surface fissure above upper handle terminal. A 7 1/4" long contact mark to right side of jug including clay residue. Some light staining. H 15 3/4".
