Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Poughkeepsie, NY origin, mid 19th century, wide-bodied, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with two flowers emanating from a central stem with spotted leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Literature: Illustrated in Guilland, Early American Folk Pottery, p. 209; the illustration shown in the book is a watercolor painted of the jar for the Index of American Design. Flakes to reverse. A large, thin spider crack in underside, including a thin line extending 4" up reverse. A thin 3" crack from rim on front. A 2 1/4" in-the-firing fissure on interior of rim, not visible on exterior. Some staining. H 9".
