Two Rare Pieces of Connecticut Stoneware, circa 1800-1830, an extremely two-gallon jug with cobalt-highlighted maker's mark and handle terminals, stamped "KNOWELS & STATES", New London, CT origin, circa 1825, paired with a rare one-gallon jar with cobalt-highlighted maker's mark and handle terminals, stamped "A. STATES", Stonington, CT early 19th century. The "KNOWELS & STATES" jug is the first piece bearing this maker's mark that we have ever handled. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market lot, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Jug with large inverted U-shaped crack on left side, base chips, and wear to spout. Jar with a 2 1/2" line at base, continuing 1" onto underside, a 3 1/2" diagonal line from rim, and a 3/4" line from rim.
