Outstanding Stoneware Jar with Incised Shorebird and Tree Decorations, CT origin, circa 1825, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large, finely-incised design of a wading shorebird. Bird is depicted with arched back, crest, long bill, and pointed tail, its body heavily-incised with feathers. Incised dashes form water at the bird's feet. Reverse features an elaborate incised tree. Cobalt highlights to incised decorations and handle terminals. This jar is the first example we have offered, or can recall seeing, that is decorated with an incised shorebird. An outstanding example of early Connecticut stoneware. Exfoliation to areas of midsection. Small chips on interior of rim. Small chips and a few short vertical hairlines at base. H 10 5/8".
