Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE, / HAVANA. N.Y", circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a game bird with striped body, standing atop a stylized ground with floral accents, underscored by a looping flourish. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Large loss to left handle. An approximately 6" crack from rim on front. A 5 3/4" diagonal crack from rim on left side of crock's front. A 4" hairline from rim on reverse. Other faint surface lines to reverse. A few shallow rim chips. Some exfoliation to shoulder on reverse.
