Unusual Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "HUBBELL & CHESEBRO, / GEDDES, N.Y.", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a large bird facing a flowering plant. Good detail to bird, including a crest, brushed solid-cobalt wing, and stripe and spots to body. Slip-trailed "5" to shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Restored top-to-bottom crack to left of bird. A restored 6 1/2" diagonal crack from rim on reverse.
