Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Bird Decoration, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR / GEDDES, N.Y.," circa 1860, decorated with a large slip-trailed and brushed cobalt bird with long tail and striped body, standing on a rectangular section of ground with a flower growing from it. A slip-trailed "2" to the right of the bird indicates the capacity. The use of a slip cup and brush on different areas of the design adds to the folky quality of the decoration. Excellent color. A visually-stunning New York State bird decoration. Near mint condition with a shallow base chip. H 14 1/2".
