Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Rooster Pecking Corn Decoration, attributed to Brady & Ryan, Ellenville, NY, circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a rooster with large, plumed tail and detailed body, pecking kernels of corn from a stylized ground. A more difficult-to-find design than the popular chicken pecking corn motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased in the New York State area twenty or thirty years ago. 8" crack from rim on front. A few short, glazed-over surface lines in exterior of rim only, which occurred in the firing. A few minor rim chips.
