Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Philadelphia, NY Advertising and Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA NY," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed "running" bird with turned head atop a stylized vine. Reverse featuring the highly unusual stenciled advertising "M.E. ALDRICH / DEALER IN / GENERAL MERCHANDISE / Drugs, Books, Jewelry / HARDWARE, et.et. / PHILADELPHIA, N.Y.". An excellent example of New York State advertising stoneware. Provenance: Ex-George & Helen VanKennen Collection. Chipping to rim. Some stable exfoliation to top of rim. Some stable exfoliation to underside. A few minor chips to one handle. Some spots of fry to cobalt.
