Very Rare and Important Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Presentation Bank with Bird Finial, Incised "W. Richmond / 1891," attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, ovoid bank with foot and tall finial topped with a molded and hand-modeled bird figure. Bird itself appears to be molded, with one hand-modeled wing with incised feather detail still intact. Bird is decorated with numerous cobalt spots and cobalt brushwork over the wing. Bank itself is incised below a horizontal slot with the name "W. Richmond" and the date "1891" with flourishes underneath, filled with cobalt. A brushed cobalt leaf decoration stems from a cobalt band at the base of the bank. The slot is decorated with leaf-like brushwork and reverse of bank is decorated with three brushed cobalt leaves. One of a small number of Remmey banks known with a bird finial. For similar examples, see The Pennsylvania German Collection, p. 233. One wing lost during the firing. Other wing broken in two places and reglued. Loss to tail and beak. Small base chip. Height to top of finial 8 5/8".
