Extremely Rare John Bell Redware Spaniel

Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Figure of a Spaniel, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," circa 1860, molded figure of a seated spaniel with hand-incised details to eyes, muzzle, and feet. A chain extending from the neck and hanging across the spaniel's body is produced from an impressed circle-within-circle design. Surface decorated with an attractive streaked manganese glaze over a vibrant orange ground, and coated in a lead glaze. Impressed "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO" on underside. One of the rarest and most prized of Bell pottery forms, this spaniel is the first signed example to be offered at auction in several years. It was once part of the important collection of William E. Wiltshire, III, and is pictured on page 30 of his book Folk Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley. Provenance: William Kelly Young Collection. William E. Wiltshire, III Collection. Glaze wear to face. 3/8" glaze flake to one ear. Thin, 1/2" spot of glaze wear to bottom edge on reverse and a few other very minor spots of glaze loss to bottom edge of spaniel. H 9".
