AUCTION HIGHLIGHT!  (Mar. 21, 2009 Highlights | New Jersey Stoneware)

Outstanding Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, attributed to Capt. James Morgan, Cheesequake, NJ, circa 1775, ovoid jar with tooled bands at the base and rim, and open ribbed handles on each side. Decorated on the front and back with an exuberant, brushed cobalt "watch spring" motif. Additional watch spring decorations extend from the base of each handle. Incised bands at the base and rim are filled with cobalt and the number "2" denotes the capacity of the jar below the rim on one side. Possibly the finest example of early New Jersey stoneware we have offered, in remarkable condition, particularly when considering its age. Near mint condition with a tiny nick to rim. H 12".
