Very Rare Stoneware Jug with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "WARNE & LETTs 1807 / LIBERTY FOREV / S. AMBOY. N. JERSY," Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts, South Amboy, NJ, approximately two-gallon ovoid jug with tooled foot and heavily-reeded spout, decorated with an unusual impressed and cobalt-highlighted clamshell design below the three-line signature of potters, Thomas Warne and Joshua Letts. The highly-prized "LIBERTY FOREV" mark is considered rare, and even more unusual on a jug form. Additionally, the impressed clamshell design, most notable on Thomas Commeraw stoneware from Manhattan, is unusual for these potters. A particularly fine example of early New Jersey stoneware. Provenance: Sanford Smith, New York, New York. Long spidering horizontal line at base, which appears to be in the firing. A few base chips. Small stone ping on front. H 14 1/4".
