Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Pomeroy, OH Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "J.A. FRANZ. / GROCERIES / LIQUORS. / HEAD OF STEAMBOAT / POMROY(sic) / OHIO." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Base with stenciled "2" flanked by stenciled flourishes. Staining to surface. Light surface wear. A 2" piece of adhered clay on reverse. Minor chips to shoulder molding. A minor nick to bottom edge of rim on reverse. H 12".
