Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a horizontal stem bearing numerous leaves and two unusual, hollow-petaled flowers. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Some bubbling to heavier-applied areas of cobalt. A 5" crack from rim descending beside proper right handle. A 5" vertical surface line below proper right handle, not visible on interior. A thin 2 1/2" crack from rim above proper left handle. A shallow 3/4" chip to underside of proper left handle. A 1 1/2" chip to interior of rim. A 3" vertical surface line to midsection on front extending through base of stem, not visible on interior. A thin 3" crack from rim on reverse. H 10 5/8".
