Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Bird in Wreath Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, wide-bodied, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, stepped rim molding, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a bird with spotted wing, seated in a wreath or nest. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Desirable design rarely seen on this form. Restoration around base area of crock, extending upward to right of bottom edge of decoration. Decoration is not touched by the restoration. Chips around interior of rim. A minor chip to exterior of rim. Diam. 11" ; H 7 1/2".
