Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX. / HARRISBURG .PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and slightly-flared rim, brush-decorated with the man's face in profile within a crescent-shaped bough of leaves. Brushed "1" to left of decoration. Cobalt highlights to maker's and handle terminals. Prized decoration and maker with desirable size. A thin 3 1/4" crack from rim on front. A thin 2 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. Rim chips. Chips and wear to inner rim for lid. Crazing to base. Some exfoliation to underside. Staining to surface. A minor base chip. H 9 1/2".
